TUCKER, Ga. – Opponents of a proposed crematorium in Tucker earned a victory Wednesday night. The Gwinnett County Planning Commission decided to recommend a denial of a special use permit to build that facility on Lawrenceville Highway.
With a vote of 4-3, the commission went in the direction of the opponents of the proposed crematorium, but the owners say they aren’t giving up. The proposed crematorium would be an add-on to the Bill Head Funeral Home.
Residents who came out to voice their opposition on Wednesday night said they were concerned about the addition of a crematory to so close to home. There are 17 subdivisions within a mile of the proposed site, and more than 500 people signed the petition against it.
The owners of Bill Head Funeral Home say they understand the concerns of the residents, but they are misguided. They say there are already other crematoriums mingled among homes across Metro Atlanta.
The proposal and the planning commission’s recommendation will now go before the Board of Commissioners in two weeks.
